A week ago today, i got the crazy idea in my head that we should take a trip to Puerto Rico. Our kids' school has a 3-week break coming up, I've always wanted to introduce them to something slightly less American, i've always wanted to learn to surf, I've been earning some money to pay for this, so what the heck. Today we made the final reservations. We leave next month. I. am. so. EXCITED!!!!
More stuff to come, as I research and romance the idea of living on this gorgeous tropical island for a whole 9 days in february. enjoy living it vicariously before, for real during, and then in my memories afterwards. of course there will be a few adjustments, a bit of culture shock, especially for the kids who have never left the country and not used to some of the minor inconveniences we might experience there. I've been told it's a slightly modernized version of the Dominican Republic, which I'm quite familiar with after having lived there, in a small village off the beaten paths of tourism, for 3 years.
My kids might not appreciate the cultural "differences" of having the power and water cut off unexpectedly throughout the week or even several times daily, the joy of taking a "suicide shower" in those contraptions where the barely lukewarm water comes trickling out of an open electric socket, promising quick and hair-raising death to anyone who dares touch the spout while showering, plus the natural phenomena of greeting little friendly creatures such as gigantic spiders and roaches in one's abode on a daily basis. then there's the minor detail of everyone there speaking spanish and me being the only one in our family who can manage to ask where the bathrooms are in a strange country. oh yes, i am excited!!!!!!!
by the way, in the above map, the letter "A" marks where our vacation rental is located, in the small surfing town of Rincon, on peninsula on the northwest end. Supposed to be awesome waves out there, was the site of some world championship surf competitions awhile back. did i mention i am SOOOOO stoked for this? totally awesome dude, i mean, this is going to be like, tubular... (sorry, just practicing my 80's-style surfer lingo here...) really just hoping i can take some good lessons and actually stand up on a board. that would make me smile. for awhile.
so if you see me with a blank look on my face, like i'm really not with you in the next few weeks....trust me, i'm not...i'm already on island time... pura vida!!! ;-)
